Set in San Capistrano, California, The Year the Swallows Came Early by Kathryn Fitzmaurice tells the story of ten-year-old Groovy, who dreams of going to cooking school. When Groovy's father is arrested, Groovy must find out what he did, who turned him in, and, most importantly, come to grips with his deed.
Woven into Groovy's storyline is that of her best friend, who is trying hard to understand his own parents' failures. By dealing with their problems together, Groovy and Frankie learn that forgiveness is part of growing up.
The Year the Swallows Came Early is another book I'll add to my daughter's must-read list, and I highly recommend it.
