THE SHE-HULK DIARIES hits a light, contemporary voice without losing any of the Marvel-ous comic book environment. It's the perfect juxtaposition of BRIDGET JONES on a splash page, with dead-on dialogue, both between characters and our occasionally green narrator. I haven't finished this one yet, but believe me, I'm hooked. And also jealous at the apparent ease Marta Acosta has with bringing Jennifer/Shulky into her first truly three-dimensional role. Beyond that, Acosta's working knowledge of NYC made me feel right at home, and longing to return. And eat from food carts.
ROGUE TOUCH shifts gears and brings us to Jackson, Mississippi, where we find our X-Woman -- or girl -- before even Mystique does. Gracing the canon by remembering Cody Robbins but veering off to explore a previously untouched part of her life (pardon the pun, and also, as far as I know--I'm hardly an X-pert), author Christine Woodward tells an equally strong story, although it's very, very different stylistically. Bordering somewhere between Young Adult and New Adult, this take on Anna Marie captures the mideast settings in a beautifully realistic way. As I'm from the Southeast, it's so easy for me to taste, feel, and hear this book. To read samples from each, or for more information, click here.
